Hmm. What do you do if your specialty is destroyed in your country, if someone like Blair or Thatcher takes a dislike to your profession? Or if India under prices you?

Fact is, most people these days have to go through a career change. Many jobs that require ten years "experience" didn't even exist ten years ago, it's called technological progress by some.

And I find it stupid to suggest that "older" people (and I'm still too young for many jobs) always think they know how things should be done. I'm open to suggestions, moreso than I was ten years ago.

Kids are picky about their food, their music, their toys, their clothes. I've met people in their sixties who are much more flexible (usually through evening courses in the arts) than anyone I know under twenty.

There are some stubborn old people, but they were probably already stubbord at the age of three.

But anyway, I still have people saying I'm too young for some things. My complaint is the extra paperwork one has to go through, it ends up costing a lot of money to search for a job. And it's happening to young people too.

The main thing is that you really enjoy your work so that it does not leave your interests and potential unrealized. Plus, very important is that your friends and/or family work with you. Plus a maximally liquid working schedule.

The answer is own business

The key issue with work/life balance is not the balance between your work and leisure time, but the balance between work and the other things or people important to you. Perhaps your loved ones want you to be 100% with them some of the time.

Dear Andrew,

I found your blog extremely interesting; I could easily relate to all the posts, now especially when considering my current "Jacob's wrestle" about impatriating/expatriating, new challenges and all :) Thanks.
